LOCAL names and faces join speakers from across the country to celebrate Salisbury 2020 Big Weekend

From tomorrow until Sunday (May 29-31), Salisbury 2020: City on the move partners come together to present a weekend packed with music sessions, yoga, family workshops, sports training, quizzes, fascinating talks and virtual exhibitions – all presented online free to everyone.

The celebrations are part of Salisbury 2020, city on the move - marking the 800th anniversary of the founding of Salisbury Cathedral and the emergence of the modern city.

Talks and discussions about Salisbury’s past from Phil Harding, local archaeologist and Time Team favourite, and Tom Holland, pictured below, from Chalke Valley History Festival, feature in the line-up.

There are football skills, yoga, workout and family game activities provided by Wiltshire and Swindon Sport and Salisbury City Council. All the sessions are provided by local coaches including Alex Taylor of Girls Love Fit and Kidz Love Fit, and Pezzaz Street Soccer and Wessex Futsal club.

The Wiltshire Creative bring a Festival of Ideas exploring the future of the city with brilliant speakers from Wiltshire and across the country. They have also teamed up with BBC Wiltshire and Salisbury Live to provide the opportunity for musicians of all types to perform to listeners across the county.

Salisbury Cathedral will host discussions and talks on its exhibition, Celebrating 800 years of Spirit and Endeavour, with Sandy Nairne former director of the National Portrait Gallery and Trustee of the Courtauld Collection. As well as talks on the cathedral peregrines and a special anniversary service.

The Salisbury Literary Festival host a children’s literary workshop with local writer Jenny Pearson, pictured, as well as ending the weekend with a Big Literary Quiz all about Salisbury. Also featuring in the programme is music from Salisbury Live.
