JOY Pinnell's 100th birthday was certainly an occasion to remember.

The sun shone all day for one of Pewsey's oldest residents - and the village came out to make sure she had a special day. And she even had a song - We'll Meet Again - played for her on Radio 2 by Michael Ball.

The Pewsey volunteers group, the PCCA, got a tent up and laid out a table and socially distanced chairs for Joy and 25 members of her family on the school field.

"It was such a wonderful day," said grand daughter Shelley Amor. "She was totally spoiled- and got at least nine bunches of flowers, and at the last count at least 62 birthday cards including one from the Queen, although they keep coming in the post. And there are more than 200 messages on the Pewsey Notice Board wishing her well."

Joy now lives with one of her six children, daughter Tina Bushby, in the village. She moved there from Wroughton in 2009, and is surrounded by her family - many who still live in Pewsey. Grand daughter Shelley said she thinks her nan used to work in service.

"We watch Downton Abbey with her, and she says 'I used to do that'

"There are six generations of us here," said Shelley. "She has six children, although Aunty Barb has passed away. and between them they have 18 children. After that the numbers get a bit hard to remember. The last time we added all the family members up there were hundreds of us. We have started to do a family tree so Nan's birthday was a good chance to get in touch with people. There are even families I've never heard of!"

Joy's clan has now spread from Pewsey across the world, and she got calls wishing her a happy birthday from as far afield as Canada, Africa and Greece.

"She had an amazing time," said Shelley. "But she did get a bit tired, and went to bed in the afternoon, so she still hasn't seen all the cards and messages."
