KENNET Valley primary school in Lockeridge has got itself a gold star.

Schools inspectors at Ofsted previously marked the tiny primary down, saying it needed improvement.

But in its latest inspection in March this year, it has been awarded a 'good' grade in all areas.

The opening line of the report says pupils are polite, courteous and co-operative and that older pupils are considerate towards younger ones. It goes on to say that there is a family ethos in the school helping pupils to feel safe and cared for.

Head Teacher Emma Russell said: "It is fantastic that all the hard work and enthusiasm shown by staff and pupils alike has been acknowledged, and that the unique family feel we have here has been experienced and commented upon, I could not be more proud.”

Kennet Valley has just 71 pupils aged between 4 and 11. Their views on how teachers performed were also included in the report, which said they felt they can share worries with adults in the school and that they particularly enjoy trips to museums and meeting visitors who come to the school.

The previous inspection took place in November 2017, when it was told to pull its socks up in writing and mathematics as well as leadership.

"This inspection happened just after I had taken over as acting headteacher," said Emma.

"I am delighted by the improved result.

"My whole staff team have been really amazing - they have worked incredibly hard to make a real difference within the school without losing the family feel of the school.

"I am blessed with having an active and hardworking governing body. We talk about our school being "small but mighty'," she said.

The report praised changed made saying leaders place great importance on teaching children to read, saying phonics is taught well with children in the early years learning quickly, helping them to begin to read and write.

The Ofsted 'good' now joins the previously awarded GOOD from SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) which the school received on their last inspection.

It said the Christian character of the school is 'clearly evident through the positive relationships, rooted in love, care and empathy, which exist between all members of the school community.'

Mrs Russell added: “Achieving a GOOD in both OFTED and SIAMS just shows that Kennet Valley school is truly flourishing and is now in line with our school vision and we will continue to thrive and move forward."

Sarah Till-Vattier, one of the Chairs of Governors added: “We are so proud of all the staff and governors for working so tirelessly, and especially Mrs Russell, our headteacher, who has been the driving force behind it all”.
