A Trowbridge pensioner has criticised the "absurdity and inconsistency" of the Covid-19 coronavirus lockdown rules.

Richard Coombes, 73, says it is ridiculous that Southwick Country Park is still open for recreational use but Wiltshire Police have closed its car park to comply with social distancing regulations.

He has written to Wiltshire Council's countryside access team to complain, and copied in the Friends of Southwick County Park.

In his email, Mr Coombes, of Rutland Crescent, Trowbridge, said: "I think you should have placed a large enough sign to explain the reason for the car park closure but to also let people know it was legal to actually enter the park area.

"You have actually discriminated against people, mainly elderly or perhaps disabled, gaining access to this area."I question what has actually be gained from the closure as it has deprived many from getting out for some good fresh air and a relaxation of the mind.

"I hope that soon common sense can prevail and you can allow people to drive to that facility and use the car park."

Mr Coombes added: "Wiltshire Council says it’s an issue of social distancing. I don’t get it as the whole of Studley Green estate could decide to go for a walk in that country park yet a few dozen cars are not allowed!

"The absurdity and inconsistency of these 'rules' really does beggar belief and surely must be questionable by the local authority and the police who have virtually forced people to lock themselves away with a bottle of anti-depressant tablets."

Wiltshire Council said: "Wiltshire Council has been following Government instructions on public open space and Southwick Country Park has always been open. The car park was closed by the police at the start of the Covid-19 emergency and they are aware of cars that park on the road.

"In considering it’s re-opening we are conscious that the car park layout will make it difficult to maintain social distancing .

"We will of course keep the matter under review and particularly when the Government makes any further statements on any easing of the current restrictions."
