PEOPLE in Devizes were delighted to see young supermarket worker Robbie Thorne congratulated on national TV for going the extra mile to keep shoppers happy while queuing at the town’s Sainsburys.

Cameras from the One Show were in town to surprise Robbie in trolley action outside the store and the item was broadcast on Thursday evening.

One Show presenter Alex Jones told viewers Robbie had been nominated by customers for a new segment in the show that gives people the chance to praise those who go the extra mile during coronavirus emergency.

Filming showed Robbie being called to the entrance of the supermarket by his manager for what he was told was going to be a training session.

He then heard a woman’s voice over the tannoy asking him to pick up some flowers. Little did he know that the voice was that of presenter Alex.

A bemused Robbie is heard telling manager Julian Collier he was not keen on this sort of training and later said it was the strangest thing that had happened to him but still he did not guess what was going on.

He was asked to also get a bottle of Melbec wine and admitted he knew nothing about the drink.

Alex then tells him to take his basket of goods outside where with customers, colleagues, friends and family the big reveal happens as Robbie is told to take a covering off a TV screen and he comes face to face with Alex.

An emotional Robbie then thanks the people of Devizes for being so fantastic. He said: “I see about 400 of you a day and you are all great.”

He was also overwhelmed by recorded messages from customers telling how he goes the extra mile and brightens up their day.

One said: “You do so many little things to bring us happiness.”

A final flourish comes when his girlfriend, who he lives with, appears from the crowd to give him a big hug.

Alex explained the relationship on air in case anyone thought they were breaking social distancing rules.

He was given a rousing three cheers by people in the car park as many found it hard to hold back the tears.

After the show was screened many people took to social media to say how glad they were that Robbie had been chosen.
