HOME EXERCISE is going to be a challenge for super-fit gym-goers as much as it is for the more sofa-inclined amongst us.

But since gyms are closed and movement outside is limited, you can still burn calories at home.

Libby Matthews is a Marlborough personal trainer. Her gym in Uffcott is currently closed, but she has come up with a few moves to keep us limbered up in lockdown.

She is a Level 3 qualified personal trainer, specialising in weight loss, toning and goal oriented strength training

“Another important part of my job is to show how you can develop the ‘habit’ of a healthy exercise and nutrition programme and fit it into your busy - or not so busy - lifestyle,” she said.

“Some of the exercises pictured are really easy to do at home, and are a bit of fun too. I’ve used different sized water containers as weights, which are just as effective as kettle bells.

"I’ve even heard of people doing bicep curls with bottles of wine and tins of beans!”

WARMING UP your muscles before your workout helps your muscles adjust to the exercises that you'll be doing, and it's a great way to slowly increase your heart rate. Five to 10 minutes of walking or running will be a good warm up.

If you’re a smart-watch owner, you’re probably already anxiously tracking your steps to see how little exercise you’re doing.

It is okay to go for a walk or run, as long as you keep more than two metres away from other people and you only go once a day. The typical goal on smart-watches is to achieve 10,000 steps-a-day.

If you need a little push, download an app like Couch to 5K.

STRETCH: this is important to get those muscles in to the idea of doing some exercise.

Stretching helps prepare your body for the exercise it's about to get. Before you stretch, it's important to warm up first.

WATER: Good hydration means getting the right amount of water before, during, and after exercise.

Water regulates your body temperature and lubricates your joints. It helps transport nutrients to give you energy and keep you healthy.

CLEANING: During the outbreak, it’s important that we keep everything at home squeaky clean... but did you ever think about the fitness benefits?

Cleaning your home is a great workout, and you can burn up to 190 calories doing some hard scrubbing.

GARDENING: If you have a garden, why not keep it looking pretty during this time?

Gardening is working out without realising you’re working out. All that weeding is great for your bum, as you’ll be doing plenty of squatting.

Lawn mowing adds to your step count while whipping your back muscles into shape.

In fact, you can burn up to 280 calories an hour from mowing the lawn.
