Fire crews from Wiltshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire were called to barn blaze down a remote lane at Aldbourne, near Marlborough.

Fighting the blaze was made difficult because the only access was down a narrow path impossible for fire engines to squeeze through.

Crews from Ramsbury, Swindon, Hungerford, Ludgershall, Royal Wootton Bassett, Newbury and Wantage attended the hay barn fire in Aldbourne just after 6pm on Thursday.

A Wiltshire fire spokesman said: "Crews defensively tackled the fire to ensure that it did not spread and cause further damage and continued to monitor the barn throughout the night."

A spokesman for Ramsbury fire station said: "We took a call this evening to a hay barn fire near Aldbourne. Ramsbury was in attendance with appliances from Swindon, Hungerford, 4x4s from Wantage and Ludgershall and a water carrier from RWB.

"It was quickly determined that the 4x4s were the only appliances getting to the scene and they remained to monitor and make sure it did not spread."

Walkers were advised to stay away from the area at Baydon Hill near Ford Farm because of fumes.
