AN organisation that runs care homes across Wiltshire and four other counties has confirmed that is has 40 confirmed cases of coronavirus and eight deaths amongst its residents.

A spokesman for The Orders of St John Care Trust, which has homes in many Wiltshire towns including Westbury, Trowbridge, Warminster, Melksham, Devizes and Swindon, said: "We are aware of the heightened anxiety of loved ones and the public at large around the effects of COVID-19 in care homes and other social care settings.

"We live with and care for a section of the population that are on average over 85 years of age, and often have multiple underlying health conditions.

"We know from the national and global press that this virus does not discriminate and no one has the ability to stop it or entirely prevent.

"OSJCT so far has around 40 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across approximately 3500 residents or tenants, and sadly we know of eight deaths that are linked to this virus.

"We have more suspected cases and numbers appear to be increasing over time. It is very important to recognise that the highest levels of infection control and care practice are being adhered to.

"All national guidance is being adhered to and the commitment of our front line teams is simply inspirational. The social care workforce are the heroes of this crisis and their work is saving thousands of lives. Please help us to ensure that their efforts are being recognised nationally and please help them in their efforts with continued public displays of support."

The spokesman, who was contacted by us about the situation in a Wiltshire care home, did not confirm whether or not the eight deaths and 40 confirmed cases were in the county.

The organisation also has care homes in Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Suffolk and West Sussex.
