Coaching and administrative staff at Swindon Town will be furloughed, the football club said.

However, the Adver understands players are not being put on the government’s furlough scheme as they are still working from home. A "skeleton staff" remains working at the club.

The Robins have not followed other clubs and asked players to take a pay cut while matches are suspended during the coronavirus outbreak.

A spokesman for Swindon Town FC said: “The club took the decision to furlough a section of its full-time staff while football has been postponed. However, a skeleton staff remains in place.”

Over the weekend it was announced Premier League clubs will ask players to take a 30 per cent pay cut. The league plans to give £20m to the NHS and £125m to the English Football League and the National League.

It follows comments by health secretary Matt Hancock that the highly-paid footballers should “play their part” and take a wage cut.

Moves to slash pay have been opposed by players. Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend hit back at Mr Hancock, telling Talksport: "The health secretary deflecting blame on to footballers. I don't think that is right. His job is the responsibility of NHS workers. NHS workers have been underpaid for years."
