Organisers of some of the biggest events in the Devizes calendar are holding talks in a bid to give the town something to look forward to when the coronavirus emergency has passed.

Devizes Outdoor Celebratory Arts artistic director Loz Samuels said: "“The trustees are having conversations about how the programme will be adapted, we will make an announcement very soon. We sincerely want to be able to bring some happy times to you with, friends and family around you which all the community can enjoy - this will happen - we all need something to look forward to.”

The first big summer event planned by DOCA is the carnival parade on July 12.

Also still in talks are the Devizes Arts Festival committee which should be staging events all over the town from May 31 to June 16.

Chairman Margaret Bryant said: "The Devizes Arts Festival Committee is following government advice regarding events for later this year and is in discussion with all 35 acts booked to look at all options. As soon as we have done that we will let everyone know."

The Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race held in the town every Easter had already been cancelled before the country went into lockdown.

The VE day celebration planned in Devizes for May 8 is also now a casualty.
