GREATWOOD, the racehorse rescue and rehoming charity based in Marlborough, is bracing itself for another rough ride.

It's main fundraising event at Newbury Races was first cancelled due to a waterlogged track following weeks of heavy rain and flooding.

It breathed a sign of relief after learning that it got another chance to hold the planned Charity Raceday,

But that is now scuppered again as coronavirus takes its toll on sporting events.

The charity, which is home to around 80 former race horses, costs around £500k to run, so the pinch is being felt as costs of hay and horse feeds have increased.

"At least the good weather has allowed the fields to dry out," said Sasha Thorbek, the charity's fundraising and communications manger.

"The horses were turned out last week which is good news at least - this will help with costs as hard feed is very expensive, as is straw.

"The current situation, including losing Newbury, will have a big impact on the charity but as of yet we don't know what this will amount to."

"The online silent auction will still go ahead which is good as this will generate some funds, although we have had to take some of the racing related prizes out as they are no longer available.

The auction will reopen on 1st May and close on 16th May.

The centre, just outside Marlborough, also provides educational programmes, including

those for vulnerable young people.

"We have suspended all education sessions until further notice, in line with school closures, as we have a number of vulnerable learners that attend," said Alex Shaw, the centre's Education and Wellbeing Lead.
