RACERS got their pans flipping at the Bradford on Avon town bridge today (February 25) as they took part in a pancake race for Shrove Tuesday.

Despite the rainy weather, seven people took part and crowds came out to enjoy the event lining the start.

The winner from last year Gary Macalister, 41, of Steve Vick International said: "I took part last year and won so I had the honour of looking after the winning frying pan. You bring your own for the race. It's good fun but it's all about the technique for the pancake. I'm supporting a new team this year so it's a bit of fun."

The pancake race involved running up the town bridge flipping your pancake twice and hopping back with it.

Winner, Harry Hamlin, 31, of Market Street from Bradford on Avon who was representing C S Bowyer Funeral Directors, said: "It was really good and this is the third time I've won actually so I just clinched it again.

"Last year would have been my third time in a row but unfortunately I couldn't take part.

"I knew what to expect this time. It brings the town together at a really nice community event. Hopefully, I will be aiming for four times next year. I've never dropped the pancakes though."

JJ Harding, 22 and Sian Copdin, 28 from Harlees fish and chips in the town took part representing the business.

JJ who came second, said: "I went the wrong way! But it was my first time. We flipped a few omelettes to practice. I'm going to come back next year and win."

Sian added: "It was great fun wanted someone to do it with him. It's a good way to get our business out and about as well which is why I decided to take part."

Tourism and event officer for the Town Council Steph Shearing, said: "It's a fantastic annual event with a huge amount of town spirit. A lot of people turn out to see it."

Town mayor Simon McNeill- Ritchie said: This is another unique occasion in Bradford on Avon with a twist.

"It's good to see so many people come along but hopefully next year we will have someone to beat Harry for the title."
