BEFORE the days of cheap flights for city breaks abroad, and Stag and Hen outings to far flung places; ‘outings” to local resorts such as Weston-Super-Mare or Cheddar Gorge were popular with Ciren folk.
Train outings were possible up until the town station closed on April 6, 1964, along with coach or “Charabanc” trips which continue to this day.
Many local churches put on outings- the Salvation Army especially which regularly took members to Weston or Weymouth where they would hold a service on the beach.
On the other side of the coin, pubs would also put on trips; trips which unlike the Salvation Army, invariably meant a lot of alcohol consumed before, during and afterwards.
