RECENT storms Ciara and Dennis have had a major impact on many parts of East Lancashire but wild weather is certainly nothing new.

Back in the days before storms were given their own names, different parts of the region have been known to suffer the after-effects of a deluge.

Blackburn has not escaped serious flooding in the past as these pictures from the Lancashire Telegraph reveal.

What might be more surprising to learn is the a number of the photographs were taken following torrential rain - in August 1977. Usually you would expect some serious weather fronts around this time of the year but a cloudburst over the Bank Holiday brought with it some serious disruption.

For youngsters though a flood has always been an opportunity to get out there and splash around in their wellies.

Adults may curse and face major problems getting to work or worry about the consequences to their homes, but for schoolchildren a seas of water where roads used to be can be the start of a great adventure.
