FLOODWATER has been running through the streets of Wroughton since the weekend's heavy downpours.

Perry's Lane has been particularly badly affected by Storm Dennis, bringing traffic problems to the area and fears over the prospect of damage to homes and gardens.

Long-time resident Anne Slater said: “I’ve lived here for 54 years and the last time I remember it flooding was in the 70s and last Christmas.

"But this is the worst I’ve ever seen the road get.

“Rubbish gets collected under the road and that’s what’s caused this huge flood.

“It’s been like this since Saturday, houses are in danger of being flooded.”

On Christmas Eve, water in the road was at knee height.

And the road has been closed to traffic since Saturday because the water level is too high for vehicles to negotiate.

Anne said: “I think things are starting to work out now.

“I think they’re trying to pump the water away and so it should start improving.

“The council sent a letter saying they will clean out the rubbish once the water level goes down.”

Swindon Borough Council said that it is keeping an eye on the situation in Perry’s Lane.

The authority confirmed that it is pumping out the water in the street.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We are continuing to monitor the situation at Perry’s Lane.

“The pump, which is on loan from the Environmental Agency will continue to be used to reduce surface water on the road.

“The road will remain closed until it is safe to reopen.”
