ONE of north Wiltshire's best-known Indian restaurants has celebrated its 20th anniversary with a party for more than 60 loyal customers.

The award-winning Spice of Bengal in Wood Street, Calne, was launched in the year 2000 by its owner Ala Uddin, now 54.

The staff now include members of Mr Uddin's family, including his two sons, Hassan Uddin, 26, and Aziz Uddin, 20.

Civic leaders, including Calne's mayor, Cllr Robert Meyrick and his consort, Andrew Bolton, and deputy mayor, Cllr Richard Jones and his wife, Sandy, joined the celebrations on Sunday February 9.

Mr Uddin said: "It has been a pleasure to have of you together to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

"We hope we will be here for 20 or more years and I thank you all for supporting us."

Cllr Meyrick said he could remember when the premises were a carpet shop and then an off licence.

He added: "It is no mean feat to be in business for 20 years. You are an asset to the town."
