SWINDON’S two Tory MPs increased their majorities as the Conservatives scored a huge victory in the general election.

With 90 per cent of the results declared at 6am, Boris Johnson is heading back to Downing Street with a projected majority of between 78-82 seats. With his gamble of calling a snap poll vindicated, the prime minister now has a clear mandate to take Great Britain out of the European Union on January 31.

Justin Tomlinson was re-elected in North Swindon with 32,584 votes – almost double that of Labour candidate Kate Linnegar.

Things were expected to be closer in South Swindon, but justice secretary Robert Buckland was a comfortable winner over Labour opponent Sarah Church. He secured more than 50 per cent of the vote and a majority of almost 7,000.

In North Wiltshire, James Gray was re-elected with a majority of more than 17,000.

While a jubilant Johnson hailed a political ‘earthquake’ as he prepared to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace this morning, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn looks set to step aside. Jo Swinson, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, is almost certain to follow after the humiliation of losing her seat in East Dumbartonshire by 149 votes.
