SIXTH form pupils and teachers from St John’s School in Marlborough took part in the Global Climate Youth Strike.

They headed to Bristol to join hundreds of others calling for action to help reduce the worsening impacts of the climate emergency.

The school's head of science Jonny Friend said: “It was important for the pupils to have the opportunity to be better informed and it was exciting to be part of a wider community taking climate action.

“We have a very active environmental group in school.

"I felt it would be good if they do something bigger as they’re very worried about it.

“Talking to our group on the way back, they were impassioned, enthusiastic and thought it was really worthwhile.

“I feel it is my job to help support them. In the school, we’re making changes and supporting it.”

The school has taken part in several action days in Marlborough but this was their first one out of town supporting a global strike.

The occasion enabled them to listen to a hustings debate organised on College Green in Bristol, between the Green, Labour and Lib Dem candidates.

Head girl Holly Mckay, who is in Year 13, said: “I found it a really positive atmosphere.

"At my age, I don’t know much about it so I could get more information.

“The hustings added purpose as it was near the beginning so it was at the forefront of people’s minds. But of course, climate change should be above politics.

“As it’s a mass movement you feel you’re part of something and you’ve inspired other people.

“I’ve found it amazing and inspirational as I’ve met so many people from different walks of life and ages.

“The message I hope people will take is as a person you do have power. At our age, we can’t vote but you’re not powerless.

"If anyone has the opportunity to go they should as it keeps a positive attitude towards it.”
