OVER 1,000 people made their way over to the Bradford on Avon annual Christmas light switch-on.

There was a festive atmosphere with a huge turn out despite the freezing temperatures.

St Laurence school choir kicked the evening off performing eight songs.

Music teacher Felicity Courage, former pupil who now works at the school, said: "I set up the choir as I felt we needed one. They only had two months of rehearsals and it's different performing it live so I was so impressed. I think they pulled out all the stops."

They were followed by dance group, Groovy Movers, aged between two and 83, taught by Rachel Arnold and Swing with Soul singer Kevin Badcock.

Bradford on Avon mayor Simon McNeill-Ritchie, said: "It's another marked event with lots going on, dry weather and a real buzz. We're pleased so many people have come along. It really feels like the beginning of Christmas.

The Shiny Light awards for helping the community were given out.

A trophy was given to St Laurence school girl, Ellie Davies, 12, for her project to help protect biodiversity by building bee hotels. With the help of her girl guide group they built them in and around the area.

Pip Mcguire got the other prize, for setting up the parent and toddler group, Little Fishes, over 25 years ago. It's helped support thousands of parents.

Mr McNeill- Ritchie said: "We're delighted to be give out two awards tonight. Thank you for doing so much for so many."

A countdown on stage took place at 6.30pm for the lights switch-on with both winners pressing the button.

Shops stayed open late with St Margaret's Hall hosting a gift fair. There was plenty of fun for children with rides, candy floss and Santa's grotto.
