ARTIST Michael Angove says the beautiful architecture of Devizes is being spoilt by a dilapidated and dangerous bus shelter.

Mr Angrove, 47, of Bath Road has appealed to the town council to help his campaign to show the town in its best light even though Wiltshire Council is responsible for the shelter at The Nursery close to his home.

He said: “It is dangerous due to a damaged glass panel with exposed edge, unsafe due to missing glass barrier panels, filthy and an eye sore.”

He pointed out that the bus shelter is close to a children’s nursery and could be a danger to young children.

He said: “It would be easy for a small child to climb on the seat and fall down where the glass panel is broken.

“I have lived here for eight years and love it. Devizes has wonderful architecture but things such as this badly damaged bus shelter really let it down.

“There are other spots which are dirty and there are broken signs which show it in a bad light. I wrote to the town council and was told that Wiltshire had no money to replace or repair the bus shelter but I hope the town council can help push it forward.”

Devizes town clerk Simon Fisher confirmed Wiltshire had a policy of not replacing bus shelters because of budget restrictions but he agreed this sort of damaged street furniture spoilt the town.

He said: “I have every sympathy with Mr Angrove and while it is not our responsibility it could be possible for us to spend money on this type of thing if enough other people also get in touch

“Since taking on extra services from Wiltshire Council we very much want people to tell us about any problems that they see that they think are spoiling the look of the town.

“If this happens I can take it to committee.” Contact him on Simon.Fisher@devizes-tc.gov.uk
