Bomb squad officers and police are still at Anzio Road in Devizes where a suspected explosive was found at lunch time.

A police spokesman said: "Due to the nature of the item, a precautionary 50 metre cordon has been put in place around the address in Anzio Road and a number of residents have been evacuated from their homes.

Wiltshire Council has arranged for them to be temporarily housed at The Hourglass pub nearby.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit are currently at the scene and we are being supported by partners from the fire and ambulance services as a precaution. Nobody has been injured."

Duty Supt Chris Chammings said: “This incident is currently ongoing and we would ask for everyone’s patience and cooperation while we work alongside partner agencies to establish exactly what we are dealing with.

“If you are a resident of Anzio Road and are returning home shortly, please go to The Hourglass where a representative from the local authority will provide further assistance.

“If you have any questions or concerns when you arrive at the pub, I would ask that you speak to any officers or members of Wiltshire Council who are at the location.

“We will look to update everyone as soon as we are able and ask you to follow our social media channels which will be updated.”
