AN ALLEGED car thief has been charged with racially-aggravated abuse of a detention officer and a police officer.

John Hunter, 52, is in custody along with fellow car theft suspect Michael O'Driscoll, 41, after an incident in the Sherston area of Malmesbury on July 20.

Mr Hunter is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, common assault, driving without insurance or a licence, racially aggravated public order offences against a detention officer in custody and against a police officer while in hospital, and a public order offence while in hospital.

Mr O'Driscoll is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, common assault, and driving with no insurance on two occasions.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "Thank you to the community for working with your Community Policing Team to achieve this result."

The pair from Hudson Road in Malmesbury will appear at Swindon Magistrates Court on October 23.
