A CLIMATE change strike is taking place in Salisbury today, as part of a global event demanding environmental change.
Hundreds of protesters have left their schools, homes and workplaces to take part in strike action across the city, in a bid to support the global campaign at a local level.
Proceedings began at 11am with a public gathering in Guildhall Square, followed by a funeral demonstration staged by rebels at Queen Elizabeth Gardens (Mill Road) from 11.30am.
A procession then went through the city returning to Guildhall Square, and was attended by so many people, minor traffic disruption was caused.
Following a number of speeches and activities, the Extinction Rebellion Samba band is now (2pm) marching along Queen Street, New Canal, Old George Mall, High Street, Silver Street, Minster Street and Blue Boar Row, then returning to the Guildhall Square.
A climate emergency was declared by Salisbury City Council in June, and several youth climate change strikes have been taking place in the city since March.
Protest group Extinction Rebellion Salisbury will be supporting the striking youths today, and members are holding a bike swarm on Sunday as part of the city's Car Free Day.
