FANS of gardening and the outdoors will be in their element at a new wildlife group being founded next month in Chippenham.

The Wildlife Club, being run in partnership between Wiltshire charity Alzheimers Support and Foragers Farm, is aimed at those who have dementia and their carers.

Joining this group will involve pruning, digging, weeding and planting at John Coles park’s Memory Garden, starting on September 27.

Gary Lamont, co-founder of Foragers Farm, said: “The group will be very relaxed. Gardening or just sitting and chatting in a natural environment is so powerful and a very positive experience.

“I’d like people to take ownership from the very beginning, so I’ll be asking them what they want to do.

"If they just want to just come and sit and talk to people, that’s fine too.”

Among the projects Mr Lamont is hoping to work on is a herb garden, an alpine area and then in the spring, growing edibles such as carrots and peas.

Alzheimers have said everyone will be able to work at their own pace in the group and keen gardeners and absolute beginners are equally welcome.

Each session will also include social time where members can chat over tea, coffee and biscuits.

Sarah Marriott, head of Alzheimer’s Support’s community services, said: “Our members benefit from the group atmosphere, an informal support network and a sense of belonging.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to do something locally and help foster community spirit around the park.”

The group will initially run on the last Friday of the month, 10.30am-12.30pm, but will be fortnightly in spring.

Alzheimers Support, based in Trowbridge, operate throughout Wiltshire to provide flexible services for people living at home with all types of dementia.
