CALNE residents are thankful that overflowing clothes recycling bins across the town have finally been emptied, after over a month of not being collected.

The charity bins are in aid of Against Breast Cancer and have previously been collected by Devizes Textiles.

There were three bins in Calne spilling with clothes, duvets, pillows, and even wooden furniture. Two of the bins are next to the row of shops on Hungerford Road and Luckett Way, and the other was near Sainsbury's car park.

Neary homeowner, Don, who lives on Luckett Way, explained that local residents are 'absolutely thrilled' that the overflowing bins were collected.

He said: "It's great that the bins have finally been removed, but now we want them to actually be removed so that this doesn't keep happening every month.

"Having these overflowing bins outside of shops is not a good look, I really do not think this is the right place to put them.

"I just think it would be a shame for a beautiful spot like Calne to be ruined by this mess."

Don also told of a window that was smashed at Launch2Learning tuition centre on Luckett Way. He alleged Police at the scene told him the window was smashed using clothes from the bins, to wrap around the offender's forearm and hand.

Linda, who lives on Hungerford Road and can see one of the bins from her house, described the overflowing bin as a 'disgusting eyesore'.

She said: "I saw people going through the bags, trying to find clothes.

"One person must have ripped open a bag at some point because there jumpers and trousers scattered everywhere.

"I'm worried it'll happen again now it's been collected."

Calne Town Council issued a request to Devizes Textiles to empty the bin and it was done on Monday.

Town mayor, Cllr Robert Merrick, has assured the bins will be collected regularly from now on.
