A VISIT from Wiltshire Bee Centre gave Calne children an opportunity to learn more about the flying insects in a safe way.

Attendees at Calne Summer Playscheme, held at Fynamore Primary School, were treated to a lesson in bees and their importance in the environment.

The children tasted honey, got up close and personal with the bees and played a game of 'spot the queen'.

Fee Robinson, owner of Wiltshire Bee Centre, said: "Children must understand the importance of our bees.

"If we lose the bees then we have about four years left.

"By teaching kids about them, we can also reduce the fear that youngsters may have of them."

Stevie Whyte, playscheme leader, said: "All the children enjoyed learning about the bees.

"It was a safe way to learn about them, and it is so important they are educated about it."

Wiltshire Bee Centre has around 16 million bees, kept in over 200 hives.
