POLICE are investigating a robbery which occurred in Chippenham earlier this week and are keen to hear from any witnesses.

At about 1am on Thursday, August 1, a man and woman aged in their 20s, were walking along Bath Road near to the Esso Garage, when they were approached by two men.

The men, who were both wearing balaclavas, first attempted to steal the woman’s handbag, before punching the man to the face and making off with his bag which contained alcohol. They ran off in the direction of Rowden Hill.

Officers attended the scene and arrested two men, aged 19 and 22, both from the Chippenham area, on suspicion of robbery. The 22-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of common assault on an emergency worker.

They were both taken to Melksham custody for questioning and have since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
