THREE people were arrested by police officers following a burglary at a petrol station in Burbage early this morning (July 8) and a dawn chase across Wiltshire.
Police received a call from a member of the public reporting an alarm sounding at the Burbage Garage in the village near Pewsey at approximately 5.20am.
A Ford Mondeo had been seen driving off from the scene. A description of the vehicle was given to officers and it was spotted travelling through Everleigh.
An officer attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued at excess speed and on the wrong side of the road at times.
The vehicle then crashed at the junction of the A342 and A338.
Three occupants decamped and ran in the direction of Ludgershall.
A bag containing a large quantity of cigarettes was found in the vehicle.
Three men were located, detained and arrested before being taken to hospital for welfare checks and then taken to custody in Melksham.
The men, aged 24, 29 and 35, all from the London area, were arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Superintendent Phil Staynings said: “This was an excellent example of how the public and officers can work together to keep our community safe.
“I’d like to thank the member of the public who initially alerted us to the incident at the petrol station which enabled us to act quickly and arrest three people.
“I hope this sends a reassuring message to the public that we take reports of this nature seriously and the importance of reporting suspicious activity or crimes that are in progress via 999 so we can act immediately.”
