THE Western Players, in Robin Hawdon's hilarious Perfect Wedding, directed by Julia Edwards, provided laughs galore to brighten a chilly, rainy evening last night at The Arts Centre in Swindon Old Town.
The excellent set, the bridal suite at a country hotel, incorporated two rooms in which chaos escalated on the morning when Bill (Tom Freegard) and Rachel (Laura Curtis) were to be married.
Over-indulgence on alcohol had blurred memories of the previous evening, and Bill was astonished to find an unknown girl, Judy (Maria Hiscock) beside him in the bridal bed on the morning when he should have been preparing to marry his fiancee.
His frantic response, and the arrivals of the best man Tom (John Fisher), the chambermaid (Susan Pearson) and the bride's mother (Annie Harvey) exacerbated the confusion. Will this wedding ever take place? See the play to find out! It's on until Saturday June 15, nightly at 7.30pm.
The pace was maintained well. The constant brandishing of a lavatory brush seemed excessive, but comic encounters ensured disasters aplenty, on and off stage. Apparently the bride's father was causing mayhem elsewhere, as guests were assembling at the church across the road. A startling outcome ensued, however and the first night audience relished it all.
