A Cotswold theatre is approaching the issues of unrest and political uncertainty in modern day Britain through a powerful new adaptation of Shakespeare’s – Henry V.

The Barn Theatre in Cirencester are running the play until June 22, with the action taking place in modern day Britain with Henry at odds with the French (Europeans).

Iwan Lewis is the artistic director for the award winning theatre and said: “This is a revolutionary production of Shakespeare’s finest History play -Henry V- we’ve brought it up to date to ‘Brexit-Britain’ and I think we have something really special here, whether you are box set binger or a theatre lover.”

The Liberal Democrats have launched a campaign against Brexit and their leader on the Gloucestershire County Council - Cllr Paul Hodgkinson was invited to the Barn Theatre to watch battle scene rehearsals with a host of school children from across the region including pupils from Marling in Stroud, Kingshill in Cirencester, Farmors of Fairford and Rendcomb College.

The Lib Dem leader said of his experience: “It is cutting edge and bold to approach the modern subjects. The nation is polarised over Brexit and the ideas are relevant to today’s society. The weapons used could be a metaphor for the weapons of ideology.”

Aaron Sidwell of TV’s EastEnders, Wicked, American Idiot, Loserville and Ghost is in the title role and is supported by Lauren Samuels who was in the West End production of the hit film - Bend It Like Beckham, Romantics Anonymous as well as stints in musical theatre in We Will Rock You and Grease.

“This action packed production with a star cast has something for everyone, including the political side text.” Iwan Lewis added.

The children also spoke very highly of the production saying: “It should be seen as it is easier to connect with,” and “It is diverse and exciting.”
