PUNTERS packed into a new town centre pub which opened its doors after a £200,000 refurbishment.

The Wyvern Tavern has been transformed during a two-week internal makeover and its busy opening night attracted football fans from around the town who wanted to watch the UEFA Champions League final on one the pub's 10 plasma screens.

Clinking glasses, loud conversations and occasional cheers filled the air.

Peter Sadler ran the pub when it used to be a Yates' and is continuing as general manager of the renovated Bridge Street boozer. He said: “We are very excited about this, the first night went really well and I'm ver y pleased with how the pub looks now.

"It's great to regenerate this part of town. Yates was great but it had its time and I was very interested to see how the pub would change.

"This new look is more in-keeping with the town, we tried our best to make it as comfortable and welcoming as possible for everybody and it looks really good.

"We just want to make it one of the best places to eat and drink in the town centre, it's as simple as that, with live music events and of course showing matches like the Champions League final.

The new venue includes two pool tables, a designated dance floor, a panelled DJ booth and VIP-sectioned areas.

Upgrading the décor used up much of the money which now features a mixture of leather and fabric upholstery, sports themed wall art and rustic back bar displays.

Beer enthusiasts can choose from a wide range of real ales, including Abor and Electric Bear and the watering hole will be part of the Good Beer Guide, meaning customers will have well-reviewed beers and brews at their fingertips.

The pub hopes to be the destination of choice for gin enthusiasts with an extensive gin collection boasting more than 30 different blends, from classics such as Gordon’s and Tanqueray to more unusual infusions such as Bow Violet and Unicorn gin liqueur.

Plus, the new food menu features pub grub staples like fish and chips, burgers, and a traditional Sunday roast to end the week.

Mr Sadler has recruited five new members of staff and is currently looking to expand the kitchen team. He is also keen to find local sports teams to sponsor the venue.

The Wyvern Tavern's first official event will be held on June 7, where customers will taste free samples of Lilley’s cider.
