PEOPLE in Devizes have been shocked and saddened by the death of Italian cafe owner Giovanni Campanella on Monday.

Mr Campanella who ran Dolcipani bakery and coffee shop in Old Swan Yard was diagnosed with lung cancer four years ago.

Two years later Mr Campanella, who loved to sing and play the guitar, held a fundraising concert at the cafe to raise money for the Brighter Futures Appeal at Great Western Hospital, Swindon.

He said at the time: "Without the care and support of the Great Western Hospital I wouldn’t be here today.

"It’s my small way of thanking them for everything they’ve done for me and everyone like me. I’ve been playing guitar for fifty years."

Mr Campanella, who in the past also ran Franco's restaurant and Isola Bella in the town, was known for his outgoing personality and ability to make everyone feel welcome.

Tributes to him have come from many including one from fellow restaurateur Philip O'Shea who said: "The hardest working man I had ever met."
