ONE man was airlifted to hospital earlier today with serious injuries after a crash involving a car and a lorry on the A342 at Lydeway near Wedhampton.

Fire crews from Devizes and Trowbridge worked with Wiltshire Police and the South West Ambulance Service following the crash at around 1.30pm this afternoon.

The A342 in Wedhampton was closed and traffic queued in both directions between the High Street junction and the Friars Lane junction.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Just after half past one this afternoon the service received a call from Wiltshire Police regarding a road traffic collision with one casualty.

“Firefighters from Devizes and Trowbridge Fire Stations attended, and on arrival it was found that the road traffic collision involved a car and a HGV.

“Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate the male casualty, who was then transported to hospital via air ambulance. The incident was under control by 14.52.”

Faresaver buses and other traffic were diverted to other routes after police closed the road, leading to traffic delays in the area.

A spokesman for the Chippenham-based bus company said: “Due to an accident on the A342 in Devizes x72s are having to divert which is leading to delays.

“The 15.35 228 from Bath to Colerne has also been delayed by approximately 30 minutes.”
