A MOVING poem about diversity by a pupil at Ramsbury Primary School has impressed a panel of judges that included former professional footballer Rio Ferdinand.

Emily Mayo, aged 11, has been named as the South West winner of the Premier League Writing Stars poetry competition.

The competition saw 25,000 children age 5 -11 across England and Wales submit their original work.

Her poem, which drew parallels between the diversity in nature and need to be inclusive in modern society, was judged by the former premier league star, singer Olly Murs, the Waterstone’s Children’s laureate Lauren Child and the poet Joseph Coelho.

He poem started: “I look around the field, and right in front of me, hundreds upon hundreds, of things with diversity.

The last paragraph went: “So take nature’s example, do not judge by what you see, we are all different but equal, we will be what we will be.”

Emily will be presented with a framed version by her teacher and will read her poem aloud on Friday.
