A TRIO of novice disabled bowlers from Chippenham have stunned the sport by coming first in England's national competition.
Khalila Hussain, 48, Sue Simmons, 59, and Gillian Maw, 81, scooped the Gold Medal position in Basingstoke last week after entering the competition just for the fun of it.
The Disability Bowls England Inter Club Triples Competition saw the bowlers beat off the challenge of Swindon Manor Bowls Club to take the gold medals in the best of five 55 minute matches.
Together with their driver Lynne Brook and pusher Pat Jones the bowlers returned triumphant to the town after the match on April 3.
Wheelchair user Sue said: "We were excited to enter just for the fun of it and I didn't even think I ws good enough to take part."
Khalila said: "It was a very tiring day but I knew Sue was good enough to be in the team."
Their driver Lynne said she was aware of how close the final end was but didn't let on so as not to put them under pressure.
