SOME of the super cars of the future could be seen in embryonic form in the grounds of St John’s Academy last week.

The occasion was the students of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), created rocket cars as part of a national competition.

Race for the Line has seen thousands of rocket cars designed by students across the country with St John’s Year 7 Design & Technology students putting their ideas into practice.

Teacher Gary England said: “This year, our Year 7 students worked in teams of four, designing and making their model cars out of a cool black styrofoam block.

“Students combined their design ideas and made templates of the body shape. Their wheel designs were then laser cut out of MDF before being assembled.

“Students then shaped, sanded and smoothed their blocks into their own design, being careful not to breach health and safety requirements by cutting away too much material into the restricted zones.”

He said all the cars were checked and approved by the Year 12 product design students. Once primed and ready to go as students assembled in the tennis courts and raced their cars along the 25m track.

Mr England said: “The winning team The Muppets produced a lightweight and aerodynamic car that flew across the track in a staggering 0.99 seconds reaching an amazing 53.71mph.

“We are so excited that our winning team will now be representing St John’s at the Regional Finals at RNAS in Yeovilton in May.”
