CALNE runner Simon Nott made the most of good conditions on Sunday to smash the course record for the Devizes Half Marathon.

Mr Nott from Calne Running Club ran the 13.1 miles in 1 hour 10minutes 02seconds to break the record by four minutes and 57 seconds.

Fantastic spring weather greeted the runners as they lined up on The Green, Devizes.

Luke Shipway from organisers LPS Events said: "Local runners representing local clubs plus many runners travelling from further afield turned out on Sunday for the eighth running of the Devizes Half Maratho to be held in the town since LPS Events resurrected this very positive event. It was sponsored by Mears Care Group and Mike Garbutt Transport, and was partnered with Wiltshire Air Ambulance as the official charity.

"Marsha the mascot from Wiltshire Air Ambulance started over 500 runners in the half and just shy of 100 in the fun run which took place on closed roads. Runners then set off, to much encouragement from spectators, running just over thirteen miles. The course took competitors through attractive outskirts and on a tour of the villages Etchilhampton, All Cannings and Coate before looping back onto Nursteed Road and finishing on The Green."

Second male place went to Ben Toye of Gosport Runners, in 1hr 14minutes 22seconds, with third place going to local runner Simon Gilbert from Devizes Running Club in a time of 1hr 15minutes 21seconds.

The women’s race was won by Amy Sole of Cornwall AC, in a time of 1hr 29minutes 27seconds, in second place came Ali Vaz in 1hr 32mins 28seconds, third place went to Felicity Bryson in 1hr 33mins 02seconds.

Mr Shipway said: "There was a great turn out from residents and spectators along the route to support all the competitors, whether they were more experienced athletes or those taking on the distance for the first time."
