CELEBRATIONS have taken place in Avebury to mark ten years since the village's community shop opened.
"We're still standing," said Michele Lomas who has helped run the store since it opened, "and it's better than ever.
"When we opened it was in the Sunday Times and the national press, mainly because community shops were not very common then."
It was opened after the village Post Office and shop closed leaving the village without anywhere to buy groceries.
A meeting was called and villagers put up £10 shares to fund the initially venture meaning the shop is run on democratic means with an annual meeting and volunteers to man the store.
A special birthday cake was baked, special aprons produced and a party held last Saturday at the Community Centre.
The store continues to stock local produce, wines and spirits along with all the essentials a household will need. And it always need volunteers to spare a few hours with the perks being free tea.
