TWO male officers were assaulted on Saturday while detaining a man in Devizes, it was disclosed today.
At around 11pm yesterday evening, police were called to reports of a disturbance by The Green in the town.
While officers were making enquiries one man ran from the scene and was chased by an officer who managed to catch up with him.
While detaining the man the officer was punched numerous times to the head causing some concussion.
Another officer, who also ran to help, suffered a broken finger.
Both were taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon for check-ups and have been released home.
A 26-year-old man from Chapmanslade was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and is now in custody.
Supt Dave Minty said: "Fortunately, both officers were not seriously injured.
"However, it is completely unacceptable that our officers, who are just doing their job protecting the public, are then assaulted when performing their duties.
“This sort of behaviour is not acceptable and we will never tolerate assaults on our officers and staff.”
