A £5,000 revamp of a courtyard in the centre of Devizes has created a quiet place to sit and watch the world go by.

The Penny Bank in High Street has been given a new lease of life by Devizes Town Council.

Three years ago people were sad when a tree which each year produced beautiful blossom was damaged by high winds and had to be cut down.

But now new planting and paving stones have been put in and two benches are in place.

Richard Hopkins from the town council said: "A redevelopment of the Chequers area between High Street and St. John’s Street in 2018 brought forth many positive comments from members of the community.

"But this did as a consequence make the other seating area, the Penny Bank look rather shabby.

"This small area at the exit of High Street onto Long Street had a tree stump and raised, uneven paving slabs, the tree having split a few years ago.

"The area has now been renovated utilising recycled stone paving slabs providing a further area to sit and relax.

"This also re-establishes the view from Long Street of the beautiful building immediately behind The Penny Bank."
