THOUSANDS of extra visitors could pour into Avebury if the proposed tunnel under Stonehenge is constructed.

That is the fear haunting Avebury Parish Council who currently have to deal with around 300,000 visitors to the village each year.

Councillors are concerned that motorists will no longer see Stonehenge as they drive along the A303 when the tunnel is built and as a consequence look to visit Avebury instead.

The chair of the council Stephen Tracey confirmed at their January meeting that they were now registered as an interested party with Highways England and the Planning Inspectorate.
