PUPILS took over the running of Corsham Primary Broadwood on Friday, with a curriculum all about recycling and cleaning up plastic waste.

The Resilient Recyclers Party won the vote in a mock election in May, and earned the chance to set the agenda at school for the day, which was organised across the two sites of Corsham Primary school with 620 pupils.

Sessions included an eco-style Rap Battle for teachers and children in English lessons, writing a rap on the theme of reuse, reduce and recycle.

In DT and science, pupils came up with designs to help to clean up plastic pollution in the ocean, while in PE teams competed to be the quickest at sorting rubbish into the correct recycling bins.

"For us it was a very positive way to demonstrate our want for addressing climate change in a small but sustainable way – we are all responsible and accountable for our planet," said head of school Kerry Parker.

"The headteachers and admin team had a great time putting their feet up as the members of the Resilient Recyclers Party led with aplomb!

"I am so very proud of our leaders today and also all our children for daily taking responsibility, turning off lights, recycling, reusing and reducing the amout of single use plastic."

She added: "We have a very supportive catering team who have stopped the use of single use plastic containers and amazing parents who are very environmentally friendly, setting up pen recycling and thoughtful about our school."
