THIEVES tried to make off with gas bottles from a home in Christian Malford recently, prompting a warning from police to check security measures.

The incident happened after dark on February 8.

Val Wagstaff from Chippenham's Community Policing Team said: "Sadly, especially where oil is concerned, if the thieves cause little disturbance/damage it can be some time before thefts are noticed. These crimes are often costly and upsetting for the victims.

"We suggest that owners check their supplies regularly for any sign of tampering and make sure that they take measures to secure their fuel as far as possible.

"If you see any suspicious activity please report it to us straight away so we can take action."

Police offered a range of measures to improve security:

  • Control switches should be turned off and the electricity supply isolated when not in use
  • Use good quality locks
  • Consider a remote oil level gauge which will set off an alarm if the level drops suddenly
  • Install security lights
  • Consider the position of your tank - this can have a considerable effect on whether a thief will risk targeting it
  • Fences and walls - make life harder for thieves
  • Consider defensive planting - prickly shrubs/pants to disguise fences and make the oil tank less visible
  • Gates - keep them closed at all times not just when you are away from your property

If you see anything suspicious call the police on 101 or if a crime is in progress, call 999.
