AN army of tree planters have helped to create a people's grove on Marlborough Common by planting 600 trees.
"It's to commemorate the 100 years since the end of the World War One," said the manager of the golf course Les Trute, "we had built six tennis courts built which needed landscaping and also partitioning off from the golf course.
"One of the members of the club said the Woodland Trust wanted to commemorate the centenary of the war by creating a wood.
"We spoke to the Trust and they were quite relaxed about the form we wanted which was along the road and a footpath so the general public can experience it.
"It is also opposite the cemetery which is a quite place to remember loved ones."
Members of the town council workforce, councillors, the general public and golfers arrived on February 7, and planted the trees donated from the Woodland Trust.
The trees are a mix of indigenous broadleaf species.
