DEVIZES School has started to prepare for its golden jubilee and want any former pupils to join in the celebration.

The school, which was formed in 1969 by the merging of the old grammar and secondary modern schools to create a comprehensive, will hold a party on October 12.

Publicity officer and former pupil Karen Sims said: "As we near the 50th anniversary we have decided to celebrate this milestone.

"On October 12 we will open our doors to the public as we have in previous years for our Open House events. This event however will have a difference.

"Alongside the usual cellar tours with John Girvan, tearoom, fantastic entertainment from Mac’s Theatre School and memorabilia display we would like to invite ex students and staff to celebrate with us."

BBC Tv’s Paul Martin will join in and give a talk in the hall. He will also be available for a book signing.

At this stage we are looking for people to come forward and get in touch. Anyone interested in taking part in this event are, of course welcome to visit us at this event on 12th October. In advance of this however we would like ex students and staff to contact us, please email Karen Sims on (ksims@devizes.wilts.sch.uk) Let us know what you have been doing since you left our school. Does anyone have fond memories or any particular stories about staff that they remember? Were you here when the lions escaped? Did you dare to walk on the quad? Did that Maria Heathcote painting scare you just a little bit in Reception?! Please include a recent photo of yourself with your email as we would love to display these ‘Alumni’ stories even if you can’t make it on the day.

Anyone who can make the event in October are encouraged to bring old photos, yearbooks or stories with them that would make the day extra special. We have our own vast collection of school memorabilia which will also be out on display.

School will be open between 11am and 4pm on the 12th October, come along and help us celebrate, all are welcome and admission is free. Our Principal Phil Bevan will also be celebrating his 50th Birthday during that week so we will have a double celebration on our hands – and birthday cake!

Please get in touch, we would love to hear from you, we need you to make this day special.
