YOUNG students from Marlborough’s St John’s senior school took part in the First Lego League Lego robotics competition held at Bristol University.

Sponsored by Redrow Homes who funded the motors and sensors used to build a Lego Mindstorm robot, the Marlbrough students picked up an award for their team work and enthusiasm.

St John's student Scott Granger said: “The team and I really enjoyed competing against similarly minded children and learning more about robotics. The best part about building a robot is getting to investigate the ways in which coding allows them to complete certain tasks and so this competition was a great way for us to experience that."

The competition, held on 17 January 17, saw the teams using robots, which they had been programming over the last few months, to complete an obstacle course which carefully placed pieces of Lego together.

The Royal Academy of Engineering said 800,000 new science and technology engineers are needed by 2020.
