SHOPPERS gathered for the opening of a new Aldi supermarket on Langley Park in Chippenham today when Olympic gold medalist Heather Stanning, accompanied by the children of Monkton Park primary school, cut the ribbon.

The new store is the eleventh Aldi store to open in Wiltshire, and will be run by store manager, Alison Cox, along with a team of 33 people from the local area.

Heather gave out complimentary bags of fresh fruit and veg from Aldi’s Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in the queue, along with donating fresh fruit and vegetables to the local school on behalf of the new Aldi on Langley Park.

Store Manager, Alison Cox, said: “I would like to thank everybody who has helped make today’s opening morning fantastic.

"It’s been wonderful to meet our new customers and having Heather here to welcome them into the store made it very special."

Following the opening, Heather, the Team GB rowing champion, visited the children of Monkton Park primary school and delivered an inspirational assembly about the benefits of eating healthily and exercising.

This is part of Aldi’s initiative, Get Set to Eat Fresh, which hopes to inspire 1.2 million school children aged five to 14, to learn more about the benefits of cooking fresh, healthy food with their families.

Team GB star Heather said: “What a brilliant morning!

"It was a real pleasure to be a part of the store opening and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the children of Monkton Park primary school and talking to them about all things Olympics and healthy eating.”

Aldi’s Specialbuys will also be available every Thursday and Sunday, offering discount prices on a wide range of products from electrical items to garden tools. This week, customers can take advantage of a range of fishing equipment, including a padded fishing jacket for £26.99, neoprene boots for £19.99 and a thermal drinking flask for only £4.49.

The new store concept includes large chillers and freezers, dedicated to fresh, British meat products, a Food to Go section at the front of the store, a dedicated fixture along the back wall, showcasing Aldi’s beers, wines and spirits and a section of health and beauty products.
