STUDENTS from year 9 engaged in exciting workshops at the Corsham School annual STEM Day on Friday.

The MOD, Siemens, Bath ASU and Avon Cooper attended, as well as three former pupils who are now working for them.

“They are now great ambassadors for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and were able to show our students how these workshops can shape their futures,” said Lin Wheeler, speaking for the school.

Former student Jack Harper, now an apprentice engineer with Siemens, ran workshops. He said: “As an ex-student of the school it felt very nostalgic to be back. Whilst at the Corsham School as a student I was able to attend many different events with local employers in the area. I remember attending as many events as possible and always found the careers stands very insightful.

“Coincidently one of the stands I went to see many times while I was there was Siemens Rail Automation, which in hindsight directed me towards an engineering apprenticeship.

“As a former student, it was a good feeling to be able to give something back to the community. However, I never anticipated going back as a team leader to hold STEM events that would shape our future engineers. It is always a pleasure to go back and see how far you have come since leaving.”

The STEM day was set up to show the importance of achieving high standards as students approach their Key stage 4 GCSE choices.

The experience gives students an insight into their future employment opportunities locally as well as practising leadership and team building skills.

“We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to these companies for giving up their valuable time and making our STEM day such a great success,” said Mrs Wheeler.
