Dig out some spare fabric, take along your sewing machine, and join a community project in Calne on Wednesday to help reduce the use of plastic bags.

Calne resident Judy Hallimond will be helping local people make bags for life in the Tesco Showroom at Beversbrook Road to support Morsbags, a national initiative encouraging people to make their own reuseable bags to help protect the planet from plastic overload.

The Morsbag project was started in 2007 by Claire Morsman.

They were living on a houseboat in London when Claire witnessed a mass of plastic bags floating by and wondered where they would end up.

This prompted her to create a basic pattern for a bag which could be accessed free online. Since then over 300,000 Morsbags have been made and given away, using unwanted and recycled clothing such as shirts, curtains or tablecloths.

All bags made will be washable, strong and a bag for life.

The free make-a-bag day runs from 10am-5pm. For more information contact Judy on 07726 594370.
