AN unusual new kind of restaurant has opened in Bolton serving bizarre curry, pizza and pie waffles.

Waffle Up, which began serving in Market Place this week, serves up the mouthwatering food you would expect in an artisan cafe - the only difference is it comes in a waffle.

The business is the brainchild of Bolton childhood friends Owais and Zamir Patel.

Owais, 35, is a chef, and Zamir, 38, has turned his back on a career in IT to follow his foodie passions.

“We’ve ‘waffalised’ traditional food, such as chicken tikka,” explained Zamir. “We even do fish and chip in a waffle - we only use one chip but it’s a big one.”

The Knowsley Street cafe has an eat-in or takeaway option and Zamir said business is already doing well.

“We’ve had a really good reaction, everyone has loved it so far.”

Far from being gimmicky, the two entrepreneurs pride themselves on the quality of their menu.

“Everything is fresh, nothing is processed and we use as much locally-sourced food as possible,” said Zamir.

“When the opportunity came to launch in Bolton we jumped at it. We love Bolton and we wanted to give something back.”

As well as savoury dishes, there is plenty to tempt those with a sweet tooth, including Swiss ice cream.

Nikki Wilson-Cook, Market Place centre manager, said: “We’re pleased to welcome Waffle Up. The café adds to the diverse choice of food and drink already on offer at the centre.”

Waffle Up is open 8am - 5pm Mon/Thurs, 8am - 8pm Fri/ Sat, and 11am - 5pm on Sundays.
